When mixing silica (a material which is a part of coatings, paints, adhesives, resins, sealants and lubricants) with liquid using conventional mixers and stirrers, a number of problems can be encountered: the powder floats on the surface of the liquid; it is extremely fine, which creates serious problems due to dust formation; a long processing time is required to completely disperse the powder after it has been wetted; low shear mixing devices tend to result in a thickening effect.
These problems can be solved by using a Silverson high shear mixer. This mixer provides three-stage mixing with the help of a rotor-stator assembly.
The advantage of using a Silverson mixer is improved product quality, the user gets a mixture without agglomerates. Also, shortening of processing time reduces wear on mechanical parts.
Some silicas are pumpable and behave like liquids. The powder can be pumped from the tanks directly into the rotor, eliminating dusting and transport problems.
