  • Universal Pack answers the customer's questions regarding the packaging

Most of people knows little about packaging: sachets are made with a lot of different materials, each with specific characteristics and rules on how to dispose of it.

So, here a few answers to customers questions:

#1 What packaging materials can be recycled?

Paper-based packaging, metal food cans and aluminum beverage cans are infinitely recyclable.

Glass is also infinitely recyclable, without loss in quality or purity, according to the Glass Packaging Institute.

We can recycle many types of rigid plastic packaging, like polyethylene terephthalate and high-density polyethylene, as well as most polyethylene wraps and films, and eco-laminates such as polypropylene and polyactic acid.

#2 What PFAS is and what food packaging contains PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) are a group of more than 4,500 industrial chemicals extensively used in consumer products, they are called "forever chemicals" because they don't easily degrade once released into the environment.

PFAS chemicals have been associated with adverse health effects; however, there is still more work to be done to understand the likelihood and severity of these potential health risks.

If you want to try to limit exposure to PFAS in packaging, avoid the types of packaging they're often found in: paper wrappers, like those for burgers and sandwiches; paperboards like pizza boxes; microwave popcorn bags; and paper cups. Try to avoid the unnecessary use of disposable food packaging, favoring reusable containers wherever appropriate.

#3 What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable packaging?

The main difference between compostable and biodegradable is that compostable products require a specific setting to break down, but biodegradable products break down naturally.

Compostable packaging is made from an assortment of organic, plant-based virgin resources, and recycled natural materials like potato starch, wood pulp, cotton, fungi, or palm leaves.

Biodegradable packaging is made from substances that can be decayed by micro-organisms like bacteria, algae, and fungi: paperboard or paper plus bio-based plastics are the most used forms of biodegradable packaging.

Universal Pack, a manufacturer of sachet and stick packaging equipment, offers equipment that can process many eco materials. Don't hesitate to contact us for more information.
